art deco

art deco poster The Art Deco period took place from 1920 to 1939, more or less between the two World Wars. It was a popular design movement heavily influence by a collective of French artists known as La Société des Artistes Décorateurs. This group was paramount in organizing the infamous 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. This Paris exposition was originally planned for 1915, but was postponed due to the outbreak of World War One. Decorative Arts took center stage at this event, where the world was introduced to an elegant and modern new style. Streamlined geometric shapes with clean lines and vivid colors were strongly emphasized.

Thus began the movement that shaped and influenced an era, affecting architecture, home décor, automotive design, as well as fashion and the arts. This site highlights some of those design categories such as furniture, home furnishings (decor) and jewelry. An Art category is also included, with a specific focus on how it was applied to advertising through vibrant and revolutionary illustration.
