The furniture from this period was designed as objects of fine art as well as for their functional ability. Art Deco furniture is characterized by the use of such materials as aluminum, stainless steel, sharkskin and snakeskin, lacquer and many different woods, like ebony, oak, walnut and chestnut. These works of art are distinctive for their zigzags and sweeping curves. The contrasting use of metals and woods are an exciting aspect of certain pieces. |

The past ten years has really seen the market for Art Deco furniture soar. Prices for the vintage furniture have skyrocketed in the last decade, and many antique dealers who traditionally dealt in pre twentieth century pieces, have crossed over and are now dealing in early to mid 20th century items. It is interesting to note that although we are approaching Art Deco’s centennial, much of the furniture from that era still feels modern. |
